Early-Onset Type 2 Diabetes Shortens Lifespan By Up to 14 Years

Type 2 diabetes is most common in people aged 50 or older but cases are currently increasing in younger adults. This could have some very serious health consequences, since a new study has found that a type 2 diabetes diagnosis by age 30 could cut life expectancy by 14 years.

In the study, researchers analyzed data involving 1,515,718 participants from 19 high-income countries. This included information on the age at which a diabetes diagnosis was given as well as deaths recorded from any cause.

The findings showed that each decade of earlier diabetes diagnosis corresponded to 3-4 years of lower life expectancy. Being diagnosed at age 30 shortened lifespan by the most, but a diagnosis at 40 was still associated with a 10-year lower life expectancy and a diagnosis at age 50 with a 6-year shorter lifespan.

Many factors are involved in type 2 diabetes risk, but it can largely be delayed or prevented with healthy lifestyle changes. Top ways to lower the risk include losing weight if needed, getting the recommended 150 minutes of exercise each week, and replacing processed foods and sugary drinks with alternatives like fruit, vegetables, whole grains, water, and unsweetened beverages.

Herbal Extract Boosts Memory Recall, May Slow Cognitive Decline

An herbal extract known as SaiLuoTong (SLT) has recently shown promise for improving memory and executive function in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), according to a recent study. Those with MCI have an increased risk of dementia, leading to the need for effective treatments.

SaiLuoTong is a modern Chinese herbal medicine preparation in capsule form. It contains three standardized extracts– Panax ginseng, Ginkgo biloba, and Crocus sativus L– combined at a ratio of 5:5:1 and has already demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

To test the effectiveness of SLT for cognitive function, 78 participants aged 60 and older with MCI were assigned to take either the herbal extract or a placebo for 12 weeks. They were then assessed using different tests designed to measure certain aspects of brain function.

Overall, the results showed that the SLT group had better delayed memory retrieval and executive function than the placebo group. The herbal extract was also well-tolerated, and the study authors hope that larger trials will be performed to further assess its clinical relevance for individuals with MCI.
